Govt: We are fed up with embezzlers of donor funds

he government has said it would no longer tolerate a few people misusing funds provided by donors for community development projects in the country.

Speaking at a recent signing of a grant agreement between the governments of Japan and Tanzania, deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Office (Regional Administration and Local Governments) Aggrey Mwanri said his office would tighten control measures to ensure that funds provided by donors were put to the intended use.

He said his office would be visiting all projects being implemented by using donors’ funds to make sure that the money was spent according to their intended purposes.

Japan extended a 462m/- grant to Tanzania for three educational and health projects in Iramba, Namtumbo and Same districts.

In his remarks at the ceremony, Japanese Ambassador to Tanzania Hiroshi Nakagawa said his office has decided to provide funds under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects in response to basic needs at the grassroots level in the country.

He said the money would be spent on the construction of girls’ hostels at Oshara Secondary School in Siha District, Kilimanjaro Region, and Nanungu Secondary School in Namtumbo District, Ruvuma Region.

The rest of the money, he said, would be spend on the third project, which is the construction of a new dispensary in Iramba District, Singida Region.

“Education is a basic need for human beings; it provides knowledge and skills for the social and economic development of a nation. Finally, it provides quality life to the people,” said the envoy.

Iramba West member of Parliament Mwigulu Madelu said that the grant to his constituency had been extended at the right time because it would assist people, especially pregnant women currently trekking long distances looking for treatments, to get the services not far from their homes.

He said his office would work closely with the district council to make sure that funds meant for putting up a new dispensary were wisely and properly spent.
